The ultimate word of the year inspo for your business

ultimate word of the year inspo for your business

Picking a word of the year. Do you love or loathe this trend?

As a word nerd, I love it and jumped on that bandwagon faster than you can say, “thesaurus.” It seemed waaay more fun than making resolutions I knew wouldn’t last past January 2.

However, I wasn’t prepared for the impact this simple exercise can have on a year.

When God told me I needed to pivot my business at the end of 2022, the words He gave me for 2023 (Ask & Trust), were ones I clung to and turned to frequently. I needed them most when moments of doubt and uncertainty were at their fiercest. They also helped when I didn’t have perfect clarity around a business strategy.

Picking a word for the year as a business owner is standing on the truth of Proverbs 29:18 – without vision, we perish. God created you for vision. It propels you forward, creates focus and shines a light during your entrepreneurial lows.

If picking a word often feels arbitrary or you’ve never considered it before, here are three prayerful questions to bring before the Lord:

  • What is Your top priority for me this year? For my business?
  • What kind of season are you calling me/my business to?
  • What do I need to remember most this upcoming year?

And then you wait.

Sometimes, the Lord brings the word(s) immediately. At other times, He drops it in your spirit when you least expect it.

Tip: If you often doubt if you’ve picked the “right” word, ask Him to confirm it. He delights when we ask Him for guidance. Typically, you’ll know it’s the word when you see it pop up in multiple unrelated places and it resonates with you.

Also…

He may give you more than one word, like He did for me in 2023 and has done again for 2024. God doesn’t like to stay in the boxes we put Him in, so be completely open to how He wants to use this exercise with you.

(If you’re curious…my words for the upcoming year are still “Ask & Trust.” But He’s also given me “Go.” And “slow.” They might seem like polar opposites. However, I believe He’s preparing me for a season of momentum, but I’m to leave that acceleration in His hands. The “slow” is for my heart posture so I don’t rush ahead of Him which I often did in the past.)

If the idea of waiting for a word to drop into mind makes you squirm, look through these categories and corresponding words. Ask God to highlight a category or word(s) that match with His plans and purposes for you in the upcoming year. It may seem arbitrary when a particular word resonates with you, but when you ask for the Holy Spirit’s help, He is faithful to answer.  This list is not exhaustive, so be open to God using it to spark the idea for the word(s) He has for you.

  • Write your word(s) down where you see it continually (mine are written on the chalkboard in my office)
  • Ask God for Scriptures that match with the word(s). His Word is your firm foundation gives weight to what He helped you pick.
  • When faced with decisions in your business, you can ask God to clearly show you which option fits with the intent of your word. Remember, part of the purpose of picking a word is to create focus in your business. This means your decisions need to fall in alignment with that vision.
  • As you strategize throughout the year, ask God how that word is meant to apply to each strategy.
  • Use it to continually center and orient you to God, especially in times of uncertainty, stress or distress.

Once you have your word(s) of the year, share it in the comments!
